My Radeon HD 7970 is running 90'C or a little higher when playing games.

Hey, I currently been having problems with my card it starts getting hot and my game starts freezing. the temps get to about 90-97'C when I am playing games.

This is my current set up

i5-4670k
NZXT Kraken x60 cooler
NZXT Source 530 Case
HIS Radeon HD 7970
G.Skill 16gigs
250Gig SSD
1TB HDD

I also have a total of 7 fans in my case two with the water cooler, two down at the bottom, two at the front of the case and one in the back.

so if you go into settings in afterburner the second tab is so you can set your own custom fan curve. this can help get rid of a few more degrees and keep a sound profile you are most comfortable.

I am glad temps are better for you now. that is great. do you think it may just have something to do with case airflow?

well that temp is okay and will not hurt anything what i would do is get some compressed air and clean it out.

also if you really want to recapture some old temps what i would do is get some good non--conductive thermal paste and remove the heatsink clean it completely and reapply that thermal paste. with the used 7950's I used to buy I could usually get about 10C change in temps.

also make sure you are pulling air in from the front and exhausting out the back and top.

i would make sure that you are pulling as much air in as you are pushing out to get a good airflow.

I just cleaned my case out 30mins ago. The bottom two fans are pulling air in as well as the front two fans. The top two are pushing the air out(note I have the krakenx60 cpu cooler) The back is also pushing air out. My videocard keeps freezing when I play games. my cpu gets to about 40'c which is fine but gpu is the one that is giving me the problem. About a month ago I did change out the thermal paste with the artic silver 5. Should I try and reapply new paste to see if that is the issue??

thanks for that CPU info. with those temps you would think that the interior of the case is cool enough. what you might be lacking is air coming across the GPU so that it gets fresh air.

you can try running it with the side case open to see if that helps. it would at least let you maybe know if air flow was an issue.

are you running an overclock or voltage increase on that card. with my cards I never got that high unless I was running an extreme overclock or going CF with overclock.

you may want to pull that heatsink off just so you can get some more dust out of it and reapply the thermal paste while there. make sure not to use to much,

which his are you using the iceq 2 or another

have you thought about downloading msi afterburner and making a custom fan curve.

it really should not be running that hot. as this is a blower model as long as you have a fan blowing onto this card you should not have issues with heat.

also while you are testing these things if you use a benchmark like heaven you can leave it running in windowed mode and it will crank that GPU to 100%. it is allot easier than jumping in and out of actual games.

what are temps with 100% fan speed

Obvious, I know, but have you cleaned the actual heatsink? The sink block is buried in the plastic case and impossible to see without dismantling the cooler.
Again, obvuious, but is the fan running at its full speed? At that temperature it should be making an aweful racket!
How much thermal grease did you apply? About the size of a grain of rice, spread fairly evenly is pretty ideal for a GPU. Too much just forms a barrier to efficient heat transfer and too little will prevent good coverage.
Are all 4 screws holding the 'X' shaped springplate on the back of the card secure and evenly tightened?
Did all the other screws go in easily? If some were/are misaligned it will indicate the heatsink may not be fully seated because the main cooler body is not correctly aligned.
