I have an HTPC connected to my TV that is currently doubling as a media server (using PLEX) and a makeshift fileserver by sharing one of the internal drives over Windows built-in network sharing system.

My question here is this: is there any way to share the internal HDD both on my LAN and on external networks. I would like to be able to access at least my files and pictures from outside of my home network and would like to avoid purchasing additional hardware if at all possible.

If anyone has a link to a relevant tutorial or anything of that nature, that would be great! Thanks!

You would have to setup the IP address as a web server, I believe, in order to make it available or setup an FTP file server, both of which make your system open to security issues and both of which ISPs frown on in residential packages. Check out this page and browse down to cloud storage services. Short of purchasing an external drive with integrated cloud capability, uploading files you want to be available from remote locations might be your best option.
