HDD Causing Infinite Loop in Windows 8.1

I recently installed a new copy of 8.1 on an SSD, then installed a 1TB HDD to accompany it for storage of games, and other things.

Everything worked for a day or so, but suddenly I ran into an infinite loop. After trying a few things, I disconnected the HDD. The infinite loop went away, and the system ran find on the SSD. I have tried refreshing, resetting, and everything else I can think of software wise, before reattaching the HDD - but everytime it gets reconnected, the system runs into a infinite loop.

Is the HDD dead? I literally purchased it a week ago from Amazon. Is there any way to wipe the HDD? What are the next steps I should take?

Solution
make sure the drive on the intel or amd sata port some mb have 3 party ports that can cause drives to act up. with the ssd unplugged and just the drive connected if it goes into a boot loop again send the drive back under warranty....sounds like the controller failed on the drive.

Unfortunately, smorizio seems to be right. The HDD is unable to do anything by itself. I even tried to install Windows directly onto it via a DVD. Like before, I get as far as the blue Windows logo popping up before an infinite loop occurs. I have contacted Amazon to return the item.

Thank you!
