unfortunately I can't move my antenna and I can't move my computer, how far can I run CAT5 or cat six cable without degrading the signal.

300 feet is a pretty far run for a USB extender. USB can't run that far, but there are devices that will run a USB connection over cat5 cable. Going above 150 feet gets over $100, with a device like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817404117&cm_re=usb_extender-_-17-404-117-_-Product .

You might consider a wireless range extender, which would go where your antenna is now and repeat the signal to a wifi adapter connected directly to your PC. Are you the owner / administrator of the network, so that you can set this up?

tthanks for the reply, since I'm new to this forum I kind of posted it screwed up so I'll correct it here..
What I've got is a cable modem located at the bottom of the property, I have a D-Link wireless N router located on the second story of the main house looking threw a large picture window, originally this router would send a signal up the hill through a bunch of trees to a reflective antenna I had made from a large satellite dish, at the focal point I had put a D-Link extreme USB wireless dongle that I'd taken apart removing the circuit board and machining a housing for it that held the antennas on the dongle at the exact focal point of the reflector, this worked well for several years and I had about 85 to 90% signal strength.
Now since the computer location hhas changed and the antenna position has changed I am now looking through far more trees and brush so my signal is degraded to the point of almost being nonexistent, maybe 10%, to give an example it will probably take me a half hour to download what I'm sending to you now :-(,
what I plan to do is locate the reflective antenna down by the pump house which is in direct line with the picture window where the D-Link router is, I get almost 100% signal to the antenna at that point unfortunately the pump house is located nearly 300 feet from the computer.
I've also changed my antenna to a grid type Wi-Fi reflective BiQuad operating on the 2.4 to 2.5 GHz RF band (wireless N)which gives me 24 dbi ,as of yesterday I purchased a 500 foot roll of cat 6 shielded cable, went with this instead of cat 5 because it has tighter twist in the cables and individual shielding on each pair, the tighter twist gives it less signal loss over distance
From the research I've done in the last few days I've found two units that will connect from the antenna to the cat six cable via a N connection on the antenna side and a cat six connection on the output side, the two I found so far are one called the bullet and another one I think is called Alpha tube- U both of these units need a power supply which fortunately I can supply at the antenna end, I know that 300 feet is about the maximum distance you could run with cat five or six cable, I think 328 feet is the recommended maximum distance (don't quote me on that but I think it's pretty close) anyway I'm off today to buy the cat6 shielded cable ends and the punch tool to install them on the cable, I literally going to string the cable off the ground on the sides of the trees just above head height (hoping some dear doesn't strangle himself or herself on it in the middle of the night) :), I have some isolators that I saved from a electric fence that should work pretty well for that.
I'll come back and post the results here.
Thanks again: Bill K
