Hi,

My Primary Drive is a SSD 840 Pro 250GB.
My secondary drive is a western digital black 650GB HDD (6 years old now).

The HDD has become very slow and I have a feeling its reaching the end of its life span.

Can anyone recommend a good replacement that is atleast 1TB?
It will be used mainly for installing unimportant programs and for storage on my multimedia PC.

Thank you!

Hey there, teepweep!

Wow, quite the lifespan on your WD Black! Though I'm sorry to hear it's giving up on you after all these years! :(

I'm guessing the WD Blue drive would be a good and reliable substitute. The max capacity is 1 TB with 7200 RPM and 64 MB cache for the 3.5" models. For the purpose of your storage, I'm guessing you will be satisfied with its performance as well: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=770

However, if you want a big capacity secondary storage solution, I can also suggest to take a look at the WD Green drive. The 3.5" model offers 64 MB cache and capacity up to 6 TB. It is quiet, runs cool and has reduced power consumption:

Hope this helps...

Hi,

Thanks for the info.

I have done more research on the WD 1TB Blue and Black versions.

From what I have read, people are saying that the newest model of the WD Blue is almost as fast as the black version, because it uses some new updated platters or something like that?

It is only £40 for the 1TB Blue and £55 for the black.

Should I get the Blue?
I will be gaming and doing a lot of multimedia stuff.

Well, if you are going to be gaming and using high-end apps on the HDD, I would recommend WD Black for sure.
As for the newest models - all WD drives have an updated technology and improvement in the architectural design.
You can check those of the WD Black here: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=760

But if you are just going to be using it for
installing unimportant programs and for storage on my multimedia PC.
Then I guess the WD Blue will be good enough for these purposes as well.

IMO both will deliver what you want, but it's up to you to decide after all! :)
