Need help figuring out what to do. My gpu has recently bit the bucket (rip my faithful friend) and im starting to get a headache as to what to do.

My system specs are as follows:
Intel core 2 duo E6550 2.33Mhz
Asus LGA775-P5B motherboard
2Gb Ram (soon to become 4gb min)
Geforce 8800GTX (rip)

Now i know enough about building a current pc. But have never had to fix an old pc set up. ( yes i know my rig is old) now i cant atm afford a brand new rig so i need to fix the one i have.

So what gpu can i put in this set up?

I've been to all my local pc shops trying to find a gtx8800 replacement or even a hd radion7750 which i know to be the best options, but no one sells or stocks those any more.

Now one tech guy tried to sell me a geforce 640 (i think it was) saying that it will work fine no problems.

Now i know a bit about bottlenecking but not alot. And as i said never had to deal with old rigs before hence the headache.

Could use a more current gen card in my system? And in a nutshell how much would a xurrent gen gpu bottleneck my system. Ie would it cripple it?
