Hello,

The board will support the video card and set up you're wanting. That said, any cpu chip you will put on there will likely not be balanced enough to get you the performance you're looking for with multiple 980's.

As the board is a z77 with lga 1155 socket, it will not support the latest chipsets, so you'll be stukc having to user some of the older ones. There are stil really quality cpu's for the z77 technology, but again, if you're planning on running the most powerful gpu in sli, your best bet is a newer chip set. I would reccomend finding something z97 or better.

You don't need cutting edge, but you need a balance. Those gpus wont be fully utilized if the CPU cant keep up. That mobo will support i7's, but they're on the older lga 1155 socket, so you'd be looking at getting an i7 3770k or something similar.

If you have a micro center near you, they are having a special on the 4790k (lga 1150 socket that is supported by the z97chipset). Theirs is listed at 279.00, which is cheaper than basically anywere else. If you buy that with a newer moter board (z97) you get 40.00 bucks off of that as well.

The 4790k will easily run that setup with room for more. Up to you though. I personally wouldn't reccomend throwing dual 980's on anything lower than a 4770k. You might even consider the i5 4690k. That's just me though.

Thanks, man. This is dead on.

@OP

Paul's answer here is exactly what i would have told you.

If you don't want to make such a huge upgrade, then i would suggest something like the i7 3770k. Still a very good processor for that LGA socket. Additionally, can be overclocked.

Hey there,

No, that chip wont work. one way you can tell is by looking at the sequence of letters/numbers that appear after the chip name. That is the socket. the socket/chipset is what determines the compatibility. You're on an lga 1155 socket. The best processor on that socket, in my opinion, is the core i7 3770k.There aren't many other chips that you'll be able to upgrade to on that particular socket that will give you better performance.

If you're willing to upgrade your mother board, you can buy one with an lga 1150 socket, which will give you access to a bunch of new chips, including the 4790k or 4690k. Both are very solid chips for that particular socket.

It's really up to you. It depends on your usage. The new haswell chips are geared toward pro users or prosumers, aka the guys running multiple displays while streaming, video rendering/editing and things that are really taxing on CPU's, which is why all those have some many cores/threads.

If you're going to primarily be gaming with some background programs running for music/streaming, then the processors mentioned earlier should be just fine for you. And with the holidays around the corner some really, really epic deals are popping up. Micro has the 4790k available for 249.00 bucks which is nearly 100 dollars cheaper than literally everywhere else.

By the time the current haswells come down in price the really good enthusiast haswell chips will likely be out and you'll have the same issue then, do you wait for the next gen? My suggestion would be to get either the 3770k if you want to keep your z77 board, or upgrade to a z97 chipset and go with the 4770k or 4790k. They're both super similar in performance and price, but 4790k has a slightly faster base clock/boost clock and tends to run cooler. that said, any of those chips should serve you and those dual 980s well.

Good luck and happy hunting!

edit: i completely forgot about the i54690k. That is another great chip at a good price that will fit the lga 1150 socket as well. definitely worth a look.
