Hey guys I am a pro video editor and I want to upgrade from a 2008 Mac Pro Duel Quad 2.8ghz, Nvidia 680 2 gigs vram and 26 gigs ddr 2 ram.

I don't use Final Cut Pro anymore, just Premiere/Avid and I was thinking of going PC this time around to save money, gain power.

My mind is just fried after learning all about PCs, and am getting frustrated with all these warnings PC users are giving me about failed parts, or mistakes in building it, etc etc.

This is scary to me because I have not once had a problem with my Mac Pro's. Going back to the 2004 Power PC ones.

I just don't trust the trash can as Ive seen them break down at post houses...but do you all think the safest buy is the Mac Pro despite it being more money for less power? Or am I being paranoid about PC's...

Also, I do like gaming, and game in Win 7 bootcamp. If I got the higher end 12 gig vram firepros will gaming be that bad? What would the equivalent ATI or Nvidia card be for gaming?

I just think Mac's use to be about reliability but now they are about bragging rights. LIke the 5k imac...a 5k monitor with old i7 processors and lap top video cards...Who cares if it's slim, that's just nuts.

I would say get a Hackintosh. The perfect balance between Macs and Windows. For $1700, you get pretty much the same hardware as a $3000 Mac Pro. Although you can't do ECC DDR3-1866 RAM, nor the 4 GB Registered VRAM, it's still similar enough to make it act like a Mac Pro in OS X.

Why? FirePro D300=FirePro W7000=Radeon HD 7870

I'm not a technical person, so probably everybody will hate my answer.
However the value on buying the mac is not only the hardware.

it's the free OS, but also and may be the more important thing, the resale value of the computer...
your 2008 mac pro has a market value today more than any other 2008 computer right?

So I think that you should take this into consideration when buying a new one.

@torcator:
1) I will not hate your answer. I will, however, correct it. It certainly makes sense, but there are still flaws in it.
2) It's true a 2008 Mac Pro cost more, but still, the value goes from, let's say $3000, to $800. And let's just say an $1000 alienware goes down to like $200 or $300.
3) The free software doesn't matter. You can always get free OSes somehow, right? (Note: Previous post states "hack Windows". :p)

No that's a total myth about Macs and reliability, just like it's a myth that Mac OS X won't attract viruses. Mac OS X will absolutely attract viruses if you're not careful enough. Especially since 2008 - 2009 during the Intel switch, Apple is no longer the most reliable PC manufacturer on the market.

3) The free software doesn't matter. You can always hack Windows, remember?

I'll pretend I didn't read that. :ange:

No one is going to buy old computers anyway. maybe for pars. Either way always give my old computers to my father.

@G-unit - I know its a myth about the virus's. Again this is a purely hardware question. I have to disagree thought when I bought my Mac Pro it was around the time of the Vista fail. Also the old mac pros were tanks. These new ones seem flimsy and ambitious in all the wrong ways. Plus I have seen two Mac Pros have serious problems like 2 days after being bought. Times have changed.

Going to miss being problem free for 10 years.

i think I am going to get a 3k PC and later a Mac Book Pro. That together is the price of a mac pro, but I will have two computers. And will always have a back up.

Yeah things have definitely changed since the last time I owned a Mac back when they were using Power PC chips instead of Intel i3/i5/i7. Plus with the extreme popularity of iOS devices it basically tosses that myth out the window. Sure it's less common to get a virus on Mac or experience a problem with your hardware, but the keyword there is "less".

For the price of the Macbook Pro I'd much rather have an MSI GS70 or one of the high end Sager / Clevo laptops but that's just me.

Yea I saw those things and they seem good. So I am picking up my build tomorrow from Microcenter. Came out to 4k for a beast. If it works out, next fiscal year I will get one of those gaming lap tops with multiple cards. You just can't even really get that option with macs. It's just having a Mac Pro on the go is useful for me for versatility reasons...Although I might of even covered that with my desk top I built..I put in 2 thunderbolt 2 ports so i can easily access any mac hard drive someone brings me with mac drive installed.
