Gigabit Ethernet Switch used as a router next to my Modem, so I can put the wireless router upstairs

Let me preface this by telling you that I'm a networking novice.
I have poor WIFI reception upstairs in my house. My modem and router are in my attached garage, along with my CAT-5 cables for various devices. My thought was to buy a TP-Link SG105 Gigabit Switch and plug it directly into my modem, and then have the CAT-5 cables plugged into them (to improve speed to only the devices being used). Then move my router upstairs, hooked up to a coaxial cable so I could get greatly improve my WIFI connections. Is this something that could work? Would I run into problems with DHCP, or any other acronym?

If it won't work, since I already bought the Ethernet Switch how would i hook that up?
Would it be MODEM >> ROUTER >> SWITCH >> CAT5 Cables ?
Or is it MODEM >> SWITCH >> ROUTER & CAT5 Cables (router & cat5's plugged into the Switch) ?

Otherwise my cable provider instead reccomends buying a $75 Wireless Network Extender from them (https://teleproducts.verizon.com/fios/index.cfm/eh/ShowCart) to plug into a coax upstairs.
Any other solutions other than buying what I'm sure is an overpriced product from them?

I know its a lot there, but if you could help (without getting too techy if possible) I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance

Solution
Buy a long cat5 cable, use that from the modem to the router, (router centered in your house somewhere). Now Run another ethernet cable from the router to a switch locally where you want PC's/devices connected to ethernet.
