I upgraded my dad's win xp machine to win 8 (now 8.1) with win 8 upgrade version (not the full ver). Now we need to put in a new motherboard and cpu. Will I have to purchase a new win OS to install?

Thanks.

If You get OEM and not FPP officially yes, motherboard is the key and core component. But when You write a letter to MS Support, with affidavit, they'll re-register that s/n for You. And even more than once. Btw. try activating the OS via phone, not via internet, it helps a lot. Try that as first. But yes, You're gonna encounter trouble re-activating the system on new motherboard & cpu for 100%.

uplink-svk:

Thank you for the answer. Sounds like a little hoop-jumping, then I'll be good. Thanks again.

Hi,

Was looking at doing exactly the same with W8.1 and spoke to the MS online helpline just the other day.

They said for W8/8.1 just activate as normal when you reload, if for any reason it does not work, just phone them and they will sort it for you.

ricky2014 - Windows 8/8.1 OEM will reload if placed on the same system, with minor changes [ram, gpu, hdd/ssd], not with moderate changes [motherboard/cpu].

For some countries, there's a tolerance for 2-3 activations on "diff" systems, but Slovakia is not among them, for sure :) [tested it many times].

And when You re-activate Windows via phone, there's a preambula, where You have to agree with some official bs, and then it will on 99% let You re-activate even on new system. Worked many times for me.

But there are cases when they simply won't, and You have to send them a letter [real life letter, scan it/make a photo] and send it to them. Did that about a dozen of times.

Though, there's almost no chance You'll reactivate on new system via internet, without encountering activation issue.
