How can I tell if this HDD is broken? If it is, is there any way to fix it?

I have two HDD's installed in my system currently, a 500 GB WD Blue with a 16 Mb cache and 7200 rpm drive, and another WD Black 1TB 7200 rpm drive. I have all my personal information/OS/drivers etc etc. on my WD Blue because the 1TB Black does not work at all it seems, I've tried every SATA port on my motherboard, including unplugging the other drive altogether. Is there another way to see if I need to replace this? If this is the case, any way I can fix this?

My system specs:

  • (CPU) AMD FX-4170
(HDD) Western Digital WD Blue WD5000AAKX 500GB 16MB Cache
    (MOBO) BIOSTAR TA970XE AM3+
    (RAM) G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2x4gb) 1333mhz
(GPU) GTX 770 2 Gb DIRECT CU II
(PSU) XCLIO Goodpower 750W ATX12V 80 Plus Bronze

I never thought I would experience a DOA piece of hardware. I guess i'm just one of those unlucky few.

DOA = Dead On Arrival. New from the store dead.
Your drive just died. It happens...:(
