i always want to try a linux distro but i'm totally newbie about, now i have a spare computer to try out but i can't decide which distro they all looking complicated...i read the beginners guide on the forum but still the image that i have in my head is; "in Linux i have to use console commands for almost everything, software installation, application running etc; i can understand that installations will be different but for running programs looks like it can't be done by simple click in app icon to open" please correct if i wrong...

what distro will be better for me to start learning how use linux ?

this is my desktop specs:
CPU: Core 2 Duo E7600 2.06Ghz
RAM: 2Gb DDR3
HDD: 150Gb
Internal GPU: Intel GMA X4500 G41
OS: Win 7 Professional SP1 x86 ( I have the windows installation disk in case i decide to come back to it, so i pretend to fully install linux, not use dual boot)

Solution

If it runs Win7, it will run Ubuntu.

What forum did you read this "beginners guide" on? Linux has greatly improved in usability over the past few years. I personally use OpenSUSE, but Ubuntu is probably one of the easier ones to use. There is an option for running it from a DVD if you want to just try it out before you wipe your computer's hard drive.

If you look at "Distrowatch" you will see what the top Linux distros are. I've been using Mint, similar to Unbuntu, for several years after trying Cent OS, Susie and some others. Despite what mother Microsoft thinks, open source is the future. Taking the grip on OS's away from Micosoft can't come quick enough to suit me.
