Solution
Test the hard drive to see if it has failed. Test it with the hard drive maker's diagnostic software for DOS which loads from a bootable CD.

HGST (Hitachi) Drive Fitness Test for DOS is one of the best that can test any brand of drive under 3 TB capacity.
Download the CD image from here: http://www.hgst.com/support/downloads/legacy-downloads#DFT

Use IMGBurn on a working computer to create a CD from the CD image: http://filehippo.com/download_imgburn

Then boot your laptop from that CD and Drive Fitness Test will load.
When you see an options menu, highlight the top one (ATA) and press <Enter>.
