Hi there, after lots of research I had decided to go fo a GTX 970 with the option to upgrade to SLI if needed (possible upgrade to 1440p monitor). I am building the PC really to be able to play Skyrim with 'all the bells and whistles' while getting 55+fps. However I have read in many places that Skyrim with ENB doesn't scale very well with SLI and it is better to just get a single more powerful card. Obviously value wise this isn't as good however if using duel 970's will cause problems, or not give the desired effect I have no problem choosing the single GTX 980. I keep going back and forth changing my mind on what to do, any help or advice is much appreciated!

Cheers

You're right about modded Skyrim not scaling well with multi-card configs. However, the 980 isn't really all that much faster than a 970, especially when overclocked. Watch some of Tek Syndicate's youtube videos on the r9 290x to get a rough idea of how you're going to perform in Skyrim with a buttload of texture packs as he benches his cards with his version of Skyrim. No single card right now is going to run absolutely fully loaded skyrim at 60fps in 1440p, but it will definitely be playable and fun on a 970 and you'll be at or near 60fps in 1080p. Another option is just waiting and upgrading your card and screen at the same time once tesla or another architecture comes out. Single cards right now just aren't adequate for intensive 2k and 4k gaming at 60fps or higher but they "should" be soon with the increased adoption of UHD.

Thanks for the response, waiting isn't really an option for me as I want to join the PC gaming world and have all the other components ready for the build. The upgrade to 1440p will probably be quite soon as my 1080p monitor is about 7 years old now. If I would still be running 1080p I would definitely just pick the 970. I really would like to know the fps difference with both cards OC, running skyrim at max graphics, ENB etc in 1440p. Sure if its only about 5fps difference its probably not worth it, but 10 might be? As you can see I am trying to talk myself into it haha.. but when I allow myself to make that decision i talk myself out of it. I wish the SLI issues weren't so hazy as some people report it to be fine, I just didn't want to upgrade to 1440p and get a second 970 only to find it makes little difference with an ENB and/or has bugs like the flickering water issue. As you can see I am terrible at making decisions!

Nobody really benches in Skyrim anymore, especially with mods. Have you tried asking this on a skyrim forum? Someone who plays the game intensively might know better even though the cards are still fairly new on the market. All I've heard is that multi-card configs are more hassle than they're worth with unoptimized 3rd party mods to the game. The 980 has about 10-15% more raw performance at stock but overclocking closes that gap significantly. However, raw power doesn't always translate to more fps and I highly doubt Nvidia will spend too many resources updating drivers to suit such an old game.
