Is it possible to move a hard drive from windows 7 to a new windows 8.1 computer?

I'm planning to reuse one of my hard drives in a new PC that is going to be using windows 8.1 and i want to keep all the files from my older drive. Is this possible to do? The drive that i plan to move is not the drive with the OS on it. I also plan to use this as a secondary drive in my new PC also.

If it is just 'files', sure.
Any applications on it will not work with the new OS.
