How do you extract data from a hard drive?

My family recently had a computer stop working out of the blue and my parents want to recover the data from the hard drive. I want to do it myself but i don't know how. Anyone know a good article or can tell me the steps on here?

Remove the drive.
Connect it to another machine. Preferably with a USB cable or dock.

See what you can get from it.

A lot depends on why the old PC died.
