I have two computers.A PC in the living room and a recently bought laptop in my office. I have a router in the living room that's cable connected to the PC. I don't want to connect the laptop to WIFI because it offers maximum speed of 54 mbps and i have 100 mbps. The rooms are on the same floor but too distant for the cable from the living room to reach the laptop.
Can I put up another router in the office?

Solution
No, that is not what you want to do.
What device is limiting it to 54Mbps? The 1st router, or the WiFi on the laptop?

Are you sure you're using the right protocol? 802.11n vs 802.11g.

You might want to look into powerline adapters. Sends the signal through the house wiring. Speed and stability inbetween a regular Cat5e cable, and WiFi.

Do you regularly need/achieve > 54mpbs from your ISP ? If so then just replace your one existing router with a more modern one that offers the performance you seek.

If you have WEP selected as the encryption type, your wireless N router will be limited to wireless G (54Mbit) speeds. Could that be your limiting factor?
