Hi,
I am looking for a pretty fast, small (capacity) and reliable hard drive to put my Windows 8 operating system on. It doesn't need to be crazy fast, but I would like quick load up and shut down times. I would be looking for it to have around 70-100 GB capacity. I would ideally like to pay less than £30 ($50) for it.
Thanks!

Plenty of 60 to 64gb ssd's at the $50 price point and thats more than enough room for win8/8.1 plus several utilities.

I have a 64gb patriot pyro on one of my htpc's loaded with win8.1, anti-virus, media center add on, java, flashplayer & reader, music rippers, Windows home server software, firefox & chrome... (plus more that I probably forgot about)
And still have just over 20gb free. And even though I have it on a sata2 port, it boots just as fast as my sata3 htpc which runs the exact same software.

Desktop. It is just so that if anything goes wrong with the operating system (which has happened multiple times in the past) I can just format then re-install the operating system without losing by 800GB worth of files. I already have a 1TB hard drive for those.

Makes sense.

For fifty bucks, you could pick up a WD Blue 500 GB or a slightly larger Seagate. I don't think anyone's making mainstream drives as small as 100 GB any more, so you'd either be getting an old model or something intended for a special purpose, like my 150GB Velociraptor.

At that price point, if you're withing walking distance of a PC store just go look what's in the clearance bins with a known brand name.

What sort of RPM should I be looking at?

The motherboard supports both. At the minute, I have an older 160GB IDE hard drive with the operating system on it. I think it is the reason why my computer takes such a long time to load, as I used to have the OS on the 1TB drive, and it booted pretty quickly. The 1TB drive with all my files on it is SATA.
