Sound card not showing up in device manager.

Greetings, I have this laptop that recently had an upgrade from Vista to Win7 and now Plug N Play is not recognizing the audio adapter.

There are no items under "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" in Device Manager (in fact the category does not exist)... I have tried installing the Vista 64 audio drivers via setup.exe that comes with the driver downloads from the HP website and run them in compatibility mode, as well as all of the drivers suggested to others in the past who have run into this same problem, but of course the installer does not find the hardware.

Through some Google searching I've found quite a few others who had this same problem but all threads end with people suggesting different drivers to try installing. This doesn't really work because the audio adapter is not showing up in the first place -- it has no idea where to put said drivers.

I do have an item with a yellow exclamation next to it under Universal Serial Bus controllers, called "Unknown Device"... It seems reasonable to think this is the sound card, but I don't know for sure and I have tried manually installing every driver I can find to no avail.

Can anyone make any suggestions as to how I can get Windows to recognize what is (probably) the audio card so I can install the driver?

HP Pavillion DV6700
AMD Turion X2 64
Windows 7 Home 64bit
3GB Ram

Thank you!

Thank you for your reply, I went ahead and tried that. It does not find anything there either -- I have a little update in the mean time which is that the "Unknown Device" in device manager is most likely actually my webcam, meaning the audio adapter is probably not being found at all. Again, this seems to be an issue with this particular model of laptop. I've found numerous threads about it online, but all of them just peter out, no mention of whether there was a resolution.
