Why are mechanical-switch keyboards called mechanical keyboards? Aren't all keyboards technically mechanical? A keyboard translates a user's mechanical input into electrical output. Dome-switch, scissor-switch, buckling-spring, they all rely on mechanics to function, therefore are all technically mechanical keyboards. So why are only the mechanical-switch keyboards called mechanical keyboards?

Solution
We can have membrane keyboards, mechanical keyboards, and buckling-spring keyboards.

Or, we can have contact resistive flat-panel membrane keyboards, electromechanical tactile pushbutton keyboards, and buckling-spring torsional snap actuator keyboards.

Take your pick. This world would be awful if we always called everything by exactly what they are.
