black screen when i try to enter bios or boot

so I just finished putting my first computer together and I turned it on for the first time ready to load my os. And when I try to enter the bios or boot menu all I get is a black screen any help would be greatly appreciated.

Some monitors don't support the BIOS screen resolution or don't support it over a particular interface (e.g. TV as a monitor connected via HDMI). Do you have another monitor and/or interface (VGA/DVI/HDMI/DP) you can try?
