Hi Guys,

I am soon wanting to build a gaming pc but not just for gaming i want to make youtube so i will need to able to edit well and quickly and i also want to host some server like minecraft servers with a lot of plugins so what processor would be better for what i want.

I7 4790
Xeon e3-1245

I have heard that the i7 is better for gaming but i do also want to host server and get a genuine better pc performance. What would the fps difference be? Will the Xeon be better for servers?

I also tend to multitask a lot so would the Xeon be better for that?

Would This PC Be What I Am Looking For?

As far as FPS is concerned, you won't see much of a difference between the i7 and the Xeon, or even an i7 and an i5. If you want to be doing editing and hosting, then an i7 4790 is fine, although I suggest the i7 4790k because of the over-clocking support, which would help with editing and rendering. An intel Xeon is more for hosting lot's of things all day long, and aren't really necessary for comercial use, even if you are doing some hosting. I suggest you get the i7 4790k and use the saved money to buy a proffesionally hosted server.

And in terms of overall performance increase, the gap between i7 and Xeon is small. It's certainly there, but it is only really noticeable for specific tasks, and not really what you want to do. Hope this helps!

Normaly I would side with the i7 but, the value per dollar is on the side of the xenon. see for yourself : http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-E3-1245-v3-vs-Intel-Core-i7-4790. As well as, I would get a second hard drive. If your going to be making videos, they take up a lot of space, so I recommend a 1tb or bigger.

Hopefully this helps.

You really have the pricing wrong. The Xeon E3-1231 V3 can be had for $252 right now versus the $330 for the Intel i7 4790K - If my math is correct, that's about 30% cheaper. For that, the 4790K model is about 17% faster in benchmarks. The i7-4790 is both cheaper and less powerful than the i7-4790K, so its numbers fall somewhere in between.

In all other aspects, the i7 and the Xeon are the same, except for the lack of integrated graphics on the Xeon, and the resulting lower power consumption heat dissipation (4W). Cache, System Bus, etc, are all similar.

I also take issue with people blithely proclaiming the benefits of overclocking, since statistics show that only about 25% of all overclockable processors do indeed get overclocked - and when one does, the whole game of durability, cooling and power consumption changes dramatically and for the worse, which is not what you want in a machine that will be used as a server.
