I often switch sound output between standard computer speakers (1/8" green jack on motherboard) to the HDMI screen output (which RCA cables into my stereo system). I would go into the sound settings, select "Set As Default Device", and it moved with no issues.

Today I went to do that, and the selection icon that represented the computer speakers is just gone.

I unplugged and replugged the speakers, and the Realtek acknowledged that something had been plugged in, and I selected "speakers" in the pop-up window, but still zero sound.

Solution
It's possible the speakers themselves have become faulty but first try installing the latest audio driver from ASUS:
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/H87MPRO/HelpDesk_Download/

The latest audio driver is at the top of the list and has the newest date.

if that doesn't fix it, test your speakers on another PC if possible because you need to know if they do actually still work.

Thanks Phillip. There was a 10/21/14 driver update, I installed it, and the "Speakers" icon re-appeared in the Sound settings. Just curious, based on the timing of the issue and the update it makes me think there was some other update (possibly Windows) that created the need for the audio update? Either way, problem solved. :)
