im' currently running this build. I don't know much about CPU but have been using them for a long time.

i7 3820
msi x79a-gd45
patriot 16gb 1866mhz (PXQ316G1866ELQK)

CPU specs says it could go up to 1600 but the board can support up to 2400. Am I suppose to underclock the ram to 1600 to match the cpu?

I have another build which I'm pretty sure is defective

i7-3930
intel DX79SI

I'm trying to RMA these two but intel support told me go get a ram that is 1600 (compatible with cpu) to run it. I don't want to buy another ram just to test a build but can I stlil use the same ram I have and underclock it?

Solution
You can always underclock the ram to 1600mhz. Intel doesn't offer any official support with configurations outside of spec, overclocking etc.

I think what they are asking is for a certified motherboard and cpu compatible at stock speeds memory module to rule out other conflict/incompatibilities possibilities.
