Will this SSD work with my laptop and how to put my OS onto it

My laptop is an Inspiron 17" 7737. I recently bought a HDD caddy to fit my current hard drive into and plan to buy and fit an SSD in the normal hard drive slot. Will this hard drive fit into my laptop?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-120GB-Basic-Solid-State/dp/B00E3W15P0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1415814893&sr=8-1&keywords=ssd+120+2.5+sata

Also I've heard there may be some compatibility issues with some laptops, does anyone know of a solution or could recommend a decent 120gb SSD

How would I go about transferring the OS from my current HDD, is there any program I'd need to use or can I just copy it over? And will my recovery partition be lost? (assuming I have one which I'm unsure about)

Or

I could fresh install windows 8/8.1 onto the SSD, in that case how would I do that without the windows CD as my laptop never came with one

Thanks in advance

Hi

Usually there is a windows program which will build a recovery disk
For win 8.1 it is usually. 8 GB USB memory stick while for windows 7 usually DVDs

problem with cloning the 1 TB drive onto 120GB drive is unless main 900 c: is almost empty it will not succeed

So re installing Windows onto SSD is probably best way to go

Make sure 1 TB drive is not installed at the time if booting off usb
( object to ensure boot sector and boot system is put on new SSD and old files on hard drive not modified and re used )

Samsung provide software for transferring from HDD to SSD
Many other companies provide a restricted version of Accronis software

Once you have made a recovery disk you could try cloning Hdd to SSD
If it works ok if not remove Hdd and install from recovery disk

Finally check height of new SSD and look at existing disk mounting tray
I have seen some cases where thin hard drives seem to be too thin to fix in place in laptops
Most Dells have a tray with 4 screws holding drive in tray which is good.

By not installed do you just mean make sure that only the SSD is in the laptop at the time of booting?

And yeh, It sounds like a fresh install is the way to go

Also as I'll come across this sooner or later; do I have to re-install all of my programs again? Or can I just copy the ones I want over? Will this mess up the file pathways and screw up the programs if I don't put them in exactly the same directory? Or is this all dependent on what program I'm copying?

Thanks for the help
