Hello
Soo my tittle sounds a bit compliacted.. I've searched everywhere for this specific server.
I want to create a server for an Upcoming LAN party, but I want a Central Server where all the games and the needed software(like DirectX) are available and stored. So that the games and software are all in the same place, but I don't know what Operating System to use for the best file sharing performance (will probably be using remote desktop to acces if neccesary)..

wanted scenario : People come and setup there PC's, connects to the LAN and then copy the game files(right version and mods and such) and the needed software from the Central Server soo they can just install(or no-install) the games and ready to play....

More information: I will host the games on my PC(best PC at LAN)
Will be using a powerful switch
Server wil only be used for file sharing, so it's a single core 3GHz, 3Gb DDR2 RAM. 250gb HDD.
Components not needed: Mouse, keyboard, monitor, speakers(basicly just the case connect to LAN and power.)

Pick something that is optimized to be a file server like FreeNAS. It is a FreeBSD Linux with a file server wrapper.

If you go with FreeNAS, be sure to get a 32-bit version for this older hardware.

Any Linux distro can also be configured to provide the desired capabilities as well.

Good point on the 32 bit version. I just thought the FreeNAS wrapper might simplify the configuration if the OP wasn't Linux savvy.
