Hi,

I run two software programs at the same time that use java™ Platform SE Binary. When I run these programs at the same time, one freezes. My 6 year old pc is a Dell XPS 630i 32 bit Windows 7 with 4GB ram and an Intel Core Duo 3.01 GHz processor, which I paid $1500 in 2008.

I am buying a new pc and would like a recommendation for RAM size and CPU GHz. Also, since I paid $1500 in 2008, do you have a wild guess as to what a comparable pc would cost today?

Thank you so much,

Joe

This is what I'd do:
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Motherboard: ASRock Z97 PRO4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($99.49 @ Newegg)
Memory: Patriot Viper 3 Low Profile Red 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($69.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $329.47
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Your CPU is on a dead socket, so going for LGA 1150 is recommended.
The i5 is a pretty good CPU that can handle Java.
If you can, reuse your existing RAM (if it's DDR3) to get 12 GB, but if you can't you'll still have 8 GB.

If your budget is greater than 3300$, tell me and I'll get you a better partlist.

That was a pretty high end PC in its day. Equivalent using todays equipment would be around $600 or so. $1500 right now will get you a near top end machine.

Depends on what you are trying to do. If you are running Java heavy applications, lots of ram would be my recommendation. CPU performance wouldn't matter so much.

I guess the better question would be how much are you willing to spend and what parts do you intend to keep from your old system?

If you are replacing the whole thing, do you have a budget? Or are you looking for another pre-built system?

It was a high end box in some configurations. Though the power supply is 6 years old. Usually about when they need a new fan or capacitors start going bad. OEMs aren't well known for putting in nice power supplies.

Pretty sure that had DDR2 1066, so it wouldn't work in a newer motherboard.

If it had the stock GPU, that would be a little dated as well, but would work.

Hi Eximo,

Thanks for the great info! I think the deciding factor to buy a new pc for about $600 is that I would have to add about $100 to the $350 CPU and Mobo to get windows 8.1 for a total of about $450. Also, I would not have to worry about replacing the 6 year old 475 watt power supply and other fans.

Thanks again,

Joe
