Hi All

I have an Asus M2n68-am plus motherboard running an AMD Phenom II 960T 95W CPU and 4gb of DDR2 which I am very happy with performance wise.

I would like to upgrade my current GPU which is an AMD Radeon HD5750 to an AMD Radeon HD7850 or an Nvidia Geforce 750TI, will my pcie version 1.0 motherboard be ok with a version 3.0 GPU, I appreciate there may be some performance loss but I am not running games at 1080 anyway, 720 is enough for me.

I have a Corsair cx430 PSU which I know will be fine with the HD7850/750TI.

I have seen various posts on the internet and the answers are varied, some say a pci-express 3.0 GPU is backward compatible with any of the previous pci-express versions and others say it is not.

Is anyone out there running a pci-express version 3.0 GPU on a version 1.0 board?

I don't want to fork out for a new or second hand HD7850/750TI if it wont work.

Cheers

Mark

Thanks for that Clutchc, I have seen that said a few times but I have also seen that some of the version 3.0 have issues due to lower power requirements in older version 1.0 motherboards. I am currently running a HD5750 in the slot which is version 2.0 I believe.

I know there is no issues with a version 3.0 card in a version 1.1 motherboard but mine is version 1.0.

Just want to be sure that's all.

It's been a long time since I worked with a PCIe v1.0 board, but when I did I never had an issue with any ver 2 card. I don't see why anyone would think there'd be an issue with ver 3 cards. Maybe the issue some folks ran into was related to another problem and they just blamed it on the version. But if you are still in doubt, go to the designers themselves for the answer; PCI/SIG: Question #6

I think what you may have been referring to above was the reverse: the fact that some 1.1 cards had possible compatibility issues with ver 2.0/3.0 slots. Even there, it is doubtful that was an issue. While I don't remember having that combination, I remember having a 2.1 Sapphire HD 5770 that ran fine in a 2.0 slot.

That was my thinking also that some were getting symptoms and causes confused, always good to double check.

Main reason I want the upgrade is for AC Unity, but as I only run games at 1280x720 not 1920x1080 my HD5750 is handling it better than I expected. Especially after all the screams on various forums when Ubisoft released the system requirements. I suspected that those system specs were based on a min res of 1920x1080 and it seems I was correct.

Would have liked some feedback from those who have actually run a version 3.0 card on a version 1.0 slot before or are currently doing so just to put the matter and any potential issues to rest but they seem few and far between. I know the performance loss will be minor due to the lower resolution I run games at so there is no risk of hitting the bandwidth limit on the version 1.0 slot.

My spec for those who want to know are:

Asus M2N68-AM Plus
AMD Phenom II 960T CPU - running stock speed with stock heatsink/fan
2x2GB Elixir DDR2 800 DIMM
AMD Radeon HD 5750 - stock speed
Corsair CX430

I purchased all the parts on eBay for peanuts, I may overclock the 960t at some point but does not seem necessary at this point, that may change when I get GPU upgrade and possibly increase resolution.
