Hello all
I recently smashed my surface pro 3 by dropping it from a height of 12 inches on to carpet and the screen proceeded to disintegrate into a million pieces. I sent it to Microsoft for service and they shipped a replacement. Now Im pretty sure the replacements are refurbished? I have no idea maybe someone can clarify.

My problem is now I have the totally blank fresh surface, while it idles the CPU its staying around 60% and the back is so hot I can barely touch it. I haven't even installed anything on it yet apart from chrome, updates and windows 8.1 upgrade. task manager shows that one process is the culprit being WMI provider Host which even after i try to delete it starts itself up and rapes my cpu.

I have the surface pro 3 with 8 gb ram and i5-4300U

Also with chrome, when ever I have it open even if theres only one tab theres usually 8 or 9 different processes running all called chrome and choking up my cpu and memory.

I have done a clean sweep for all malware using malware bytes, superantispyware, hitman pro, and ccleaner

please help my surface is burning up and the battery dies in about 40 mins like this

Lacking a box may indicate it is refurbished. If it was me I would try reinstalling windows again using the refresh PC.

Hit Start >> Search "refresh pc" >> select "remove everything and reinstall windows"

If that doesn't work contact them, inform them your cpu was idling at 60% and you performed a fresh install and the wmi is still eating cpu power.

How was the replacement provided? Was it in its typical packaging?

Also what you are describing seems to be likely a process that is abusing your wmi. My uncle had a similar thing happening on his machine and he had something called search protect installed. It is important to note that sometimes these programs elude scans and have to be found manually.

If you just got the tablet and nothing sensitive is on it I would attempt a fresh install of windows.

Also you can attempt the following first:

1. Boot in safe mode to see if problem persists
2. Look for any programs that do not belong
3. Perform maintenance or system recovery
