Noob to Unlocked and sim cards /Phones

So im a noob to cell phones but can someone care to explain something to me? I see this iphone 5s on amazon (go ahead android users, cry more) and it is unlocked. Do i have to pay extra for a at places like at&t? Do I go up to them, show them my phone and i get a sim card for free? Sorry my english is not very good.

frags answer is better than mine. Apparently at&t do give free sims but everywhere in my country does not (Australia). At&t do not operate here. When I say prepaid I mean you put credit on your sim and use that credit then top it up, this is probably the best option if you don't use your phone much. You can get a plan like frag suggested where you pay a set fee every month and get a x hours and x texts with x data.

How much will a prepaid sim cost? i am trying to save as much money as possible.

AT&T provides free SIM cards, new user or not.

Straight Talk is a good choice if you want to go pre-paid. $30 per month for 1500 minutes, unlimited text and 100MB of data or $45 per month for unlimited Talk, Text and 3GB of data.
