Hello Tom's Hardware :) I'm new to the forums and need a bit of help upgrading the RAM on my computer and figuring out if it is compatible with my motherboard. Here is my motherboard: http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2659#ov And here is the RAM I am looking to purchase: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA3SD22V7288 I have been on here quite a bit and know that you guys will probably ask what I am looking to use it for. I plan to use it for some pretty high performance gaming. My CPU and GPU are handling my games fine, but I only have 4 GB of memory right now, which is slowing me down. A reply would greatly be appreciated :)

Okay sweet. The RAM I posted is the same RAM I am looking at, but I plan on getting it through Ebay and it says it is buffered. I looked up this a little bit and it said something about it being registered. Is there a way I can find out if is still compatible, or does that not really mean much? Sorry for all the questions :p I'll be sure to upvote if that helps you at all!

Well, I just need 8 gb of memory that works in my motherboard. If the ECC and buffered part do not work because my motherboard does not allow them that is not a big deal. I just want to know if it can do the basic features well enough to be worth buying the 8gb for 40$. Unless you guys have maybe a better website to purchase that amount for the same or less and it would work better? All in all of what I just said is I just need it to fulfill the basic functions.

It may be tough to find reasonably priced DDR2 now since it hasn't been used for a while. eBay is actually a good place to look. If you already have 2x2GB sticks, you can just get another 2x2GB set for a total of 8GB. Just look for something like this:

4GB kit (2GBx2) DDR2-800 PC2-6400 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.8V 256Meg x 64

What does the "PC2-6400" part mean? I have seen the 6400 replaced with 5300. Is it the speed? Or can only 5300s fit in 5300 motherboards?

Yes, that is basically the speed of the RAM. The 6400 refers to the transfer rate, so 6400MB/s. It's also referred to as DDR2-800. You MB supports DDR2-800, so that's what you want.

See the chart on this page for a more in depth explanation:
