Project: building a gaming PC with my son

My son has (finally!) expressed interest in transitioning away from his Xbox and going to PC for gaming. This is partly because his friends are dropping off Xbox, and he has an interest in PC building.

I have an Asrock z77 Extreme4, i5-3570k, 8gm ram, corsair carbide case, Windows 7 home premium, Intel SSD, WD 1TB HD, and an EVGA GTX-760SC which I really like. Even without overclocking, I can play pretty much everything I want. I think the best plan of action for him would be to build something similar, but with slightly more modern CPU/motherboard/GPU. FWIW, I prefer Intel and Nvidia.

Looking for recommendations on those: CPU/motherboard/GPU. It might just be the case that I go with models I have to save some money, but it will go obsolete faster. I can pick out a decent case, PSU, memory, etc. He'd likely be playing FPS games and sandboxes. Thanks!

Make sure to assemble this on PCPartPicker! They receive all the specs of their hardware from manufacturers, so they have a compatibility filter so you wouldn't have to worry about getting incompatible parts.

It's also a lot cleaner for us to check your build because they have links for lists you create which you can post onto here.

I don't see us overclocking, so the non-K with stock cooler will probably be just fine. I am extremely satisfied with my Extreme4, so we'll probably go with that. I also like the 770 for $250.

This will be a fun project for us to do together. Thanks for the tips.

:) Be sure not to cheap out on the case! It's my favorite part haha. For mid towers, I'd recommend the NZXT Phantom 410 or Fractal Design R4. For full towers, I'd recommend the Enthoo Pro or Enthoo Luxe. Good luck on your build!

Good advice. I like the clean look of my 200R, but I'm sure he's willing to entertain options.

I'm actually checking CL for gaming rigs. Found one for $650 with almost everything I need, and it is about $200 less than a similar build from scratch. Might be a good starting point. May be able to talk him down a little as well.
