Very slow DNS lookup - Windows 7

Hi all,

I've noticed recently (within the past month or so), that DNS lookups seem to be taking a very long time, when browsing the internet - around 5 seconds for an uncached site - and I've noticed the "Looking up..." message in the bottom left of Firefox, which I've never noticed before. File downloads are fine and speed tests are fine (65-70Mbps depending on time/day, <20ms ping)

I can't pinpoint exactly when it started happening, I just became increasingly aware of it, but it seems to coincide with when I did a clean install of Windows 7 about a month ago (due to a BSOD, which the clean install fixed).

Current setup is:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel Core i5 2500k
8GB RAM
Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 motherboard
2GB GeForce GTX 770

What I've tried so far:

Check connection speed on SpeedTest.net
Firefox Safe Mode
Uninstall all Firefox add ons, test and re-add
Try other browsers
Scan for viruses, malware, spyware (I'm fastidious about this and didn't find anything)
Check Network driver is up to date
Uninstall Network driver and update anyway
Google Namebench and change DNS servers
Uninstall VPN client (which isn't being used when I have the problems)
Boot Windows in Safe Mode

None of the above seems to have worked. Is there anything else I can try out?

I did try changing to the servers syuggested by Namebench, but it seemed to have no impact.

The suggested servers were: my ISP, Google then GAK or BAK - something like that.

When you changed the DNS, did you do it on the router or in the network properties of your computer?

I changed it in the network properties. According to this article, I can't change the DNS on my router - it's a BT Home Hub 5.

I'm at work at the moment, but will try this when I get home. Should the response by more-or-less instant if everything is working ok?

Seems to be more or less instant.

OK, so your next step would be to repeat the same with your ISP-assigned DNS server. From command prompt, execute "ipconfig /all", you will see a line(s) for DNS servers. If these are local (that is, your router pretends to be DNS server), check router' status to see what actual DNS server it is using, and repeat nslookup test for both that server, and your assigned server.

Just tried this and the response was pretty much instant again.

It was happening to me I'm also on BT infinity 2, I just had to wait until it resolved itself, I tried changing the IPv4 DNS settings but it had no impact apart from id get quicker response time when pinging Google.com
