in win8.1 safe mode I can't get networking...why?

Asus Laptop....win8.1 version. I can get into safe mode but I can't activate the networking . I dot the safe mode and networking bullets but it won't make the internet connection when in safe mode.

Go to the command shell. Cmd.exe - type ping 127.0.0.1

If you get a response back then it's not your NIC (network interface card).

Then try to ping your gateway - ping <Gateway IP address>

If you get a response then your computer sees the gateway.

Before you do that though, try connecting directly to the router with an Ethernet cable and see if that works.

Maybe your not getting the needed drivers for the wireless NIC in safe mode.

RESPONSE......managed to get command prompt to work....ping 127.0.0.1 worked. When I tried ping gateway the response was.....Ping request could not find host gateway. Please check the name and try again.

long story.....been reading about ransomeware and file locking viruses. Bought a program called Hitman Pro that gets rid of it but it is usually run in SafeMode if the computer browser is locked. I booted to safe mode to give it a try and discovered that I couldn't get a network connection in safe mode. My computer is not currently infected. I am trying to be proactive. Thanks for sticking with me on this problem Arossetti. One other thought.....in normal mode, my laptop needs my password to log on....would this have anything to do with this problem? murdybits

it's possible that Hitman Pro is disabling network connections in safe mode, if it's installed try uninstalling it and see if you still have problems in safe mode.

HI Entomber.......getting rid of HItman didn't seem to make any difference. I guess I am just going to have to live with this problem. My machine is working fine otherwise. Murdybits

Alright, as long as you can live with it.

If you really wanted to fix it you could try a fresh install of Windows but I don't think that'd be necessary if everything outside of safe mode networking is working fine.
