Need some help on buying a new gaming computer!

Hello, I'm kind of new to this website but I have gotten great advice from this community so I decided to ask for some help/advice on this.

Currently, I have an old office computer from 2007 with some different parts onto it but here are the specs I got from CPU-Z and Control Panel>System.

Motherboard: PEGATRON CORPORATION Benicia 1.01
GPU/GFX Card: nVidia GeForce GT 620
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300
RAM: DDR2 8GB
OS: Windows 7 Home-Premium 64-bit

My planning budget for a new gaming PC would be about $1000-$1750.
Anyone here able to suggest some great parts or prebuilts for the price range? (I am asking for pre-builts as I have never assembled a computer before, but I do want to try it.)

I recommend building it yourself, if you can watch some building videos and read up on building. Prebuilts are never good for the money.

The i7 isn't needed for gaming; the second build would be for 1440p or 144Hz.
