I have a cheap MSI H81M-E33 motherboard and am more than happy with it, all my parts perform great. I am wondering, what really are the benefits of buying an expensive motherboard other than overclocking?
More features. Multi gpu support, better audio hardware, more usb/ethernet ports, more sata ports and other storage media and finally, usually higher quality components. Every board has a build it belongs in. Usually there is little or no performance difference when using stock clocked cpus.

mostly people buy higher end motherboards for more pcie16x lanes running at high bandwidth for sli or crossfire support, or for better stability when overclocking above the average or modest range. high end fps shooter gamers will look for high end internet controllers. and again some want extra 6gb sata or 3.0 usb ports. i guess maybe for users without discrete graphics cards, they may want good audio controllers, but graphics cards handle this now.
