I need your help here. So I recently purchased the same motherboard I have had with this computer before. My motherboard got fried (don't ask how) so I purchased a replacement. ANYWAYS, I know all these components work with my motherboard, except the bios chipset (which is now 2.90 in the new one) is different. I took out my old motherboard and put everything from my old one on my new one. Here's my problem:

1.I turn on the desktop

2. Dr.Debug (the Debug device on the motherboard that gives you an error code if something goes wrong) stays on 0x36. In the manual, 0x36 means ""CPU post-memory initialization. System Management Mode (SMM) initialization"."

3. Computer endlessly restarts on its own

The CPU I am using is the Intel i5 2500k.

I took it out and re-placed my CPU in there. The second time I placed it in there I accidentally placed it the wrong way and it got "whopper jawed" so I took it out and placed it in there correctly. (Yes I made sure not to touch the bottom of the CPU). The error makes it seem as if it's recognizing I have a CPU but something is making it hang up..?

I am very worried. I don't have the money to purchase a new CPU right now, so I hope that's not the problem. I have researched on the internet about my problem to no avail.

I have reset my CMOS, including taking out the battery for some minutes.

Thanks for the help! Any is appreciated!

Okay so when taking out my CPU to investigate broken pins, where do I put my CPU on top of? Plastic? I don't want to lay it on something that would damage it.

Upon further inspection I didn't see any bent pins and what not. The problem still persists though, still getting caught on 0x36.

Did tests on all the other parts and they all work. I have no other CPU to put into the mobo though to see if that's the real problem.

I don't know. Is there any way to tell? And what if it came with a BIOS that isn't compatible with the CPU?

This is my motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157293

This is my CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072

When I ordered my motherboard about two years ago, it was compatible with the CPU. Then I reordered the same motherboard, and it doesn't work. So you think it's the BIOS that for some reason isn't compatible with it now?

If that's the case, how can I fix it? Can they send me another motherboard with a lower chipset?

according to asrock if you look at the boards cpu list you will see your chip and what bios its supported under -- now theres no guarantee what bios is shipped with your board [ my board was out for like a year or so and still came to me with the first release bios on it ] [ I think them good deals from newegg are suspect like I got old stock and not new]

all I know is you would have to have a supported cpu in order to post to bios in order to flash to the bios you need

did you find what bios you do have now??

On my old motherboard, the one that stopped working, there is a sticker that says which BIOS it is next to my Sata ports, but It's not on the same place on my new one and I can't find it.

But that makes no sense for ASRock, because I ordered the same exact motherboard I had before, and it worked before. They're practically just saying "I hope you get a motherboard with a good BIOS on it!". Is there a way I can contact them and have them ship out a different chipset or motherboard with the BIOS the same as my original motherboard?

ah yes I found it

The BIOS version is P2.90.

I have no clue what my older motherboards was though, I think it was like P2.20 my older one was.

so then your chip should be well covered so lets guess then if all your parts work fine but not the chip cause its the only thing I assume you put back in and nothing works best guess is it may of got the damage ?????

unless you got a chip to test that your still guessing ... you can risk a new chip at a cheap price just to test for like 45 bucks or buy a chip that's what you really need like a 3570 for 230 bucks ??

you have to decide on what way to go on that and still may be right where your at now .. that's a tough one

So you're saying the BIOS version (2.90) is compatible with the CPU (Intel i5 2500k)?

Ah so it's either a DOA motherboard, or the CPU is broken?

ya , but I would have to look at the chip that went through that old motherboard it may of got fried on well before I would the new motherboard being doa -- but with out that back up part to check all things out your still at guess work

something fried on your old board and as I said you now don't know what caused it or what it took with it you said you tested everything but the chip so you have to treat it as suspect until you can prove otherwise
