I have a Fx-6300 sitting on a Gigabyte 970a-ds3
8gb Kingston Hyper X black 1600,
XFX HD 7770,
Corsair CX600 PSU

My question is..

Should I first Upgrade my GPU to a R9 280x or should I upgrade to a motherboard which supports over clocking? as the 970a-DS3 does not.
Or would it be best to spend my money on a better AMD CPU?
Or just save for longer and do a whole new build?

Any suggestions would be appreciated

you like i said the r9-280x will be the best upgrade you can make now you will see improvents in games and its much better worth it then the others. the 280x plays almost all games on max settings 60 fps as i myself have the 7970 wich is a rebranded r9-280x so i know and the 280x is better clocked so yes it will play games on even max settings good fps, some games you may need to put on medium and no AA

It depends what you are expecting and what games you play etc then we can easier answer the question, but i would say that upgrading the gpu would be the best improvment

I really just want to be able to play Far Cry 4 this Christmas even on medium or low with a decent frame rate.
The motherboard upgrade can come later.. but do I upgrade the motherboard to over clock my CPU or buy a better FX CPU that my current motherboard can support?

Okay thanks for the advice guys.
I will be ordering my R9 280x next week hopefully, I'm going for the MSI brand card.
Hoping this will see me through FC4 and GTAV with nice looking game play and to hell with bottlenecking for now

Great pick the r9-280x is a really good card and pretty cheap compared to others as this card will serve you a long time as it will crush almost all games you throw at it aslong as you play on 1080p or lower some games like far cry 3,4 or crysis you may need to lower settings but even on max you get a around 40 fps.

and the fx-6300 will not bottleneck the card either so you will be good.
