Last night my computer randomly displayed vertical red and grey lines, followed by a blue screen. the error code was:

*** STOP: 0x00000101 (0x0000000000000031, 0x0000000000000000, 0xFFFFF88002F64180, 0X0000000000000002)

I rebooted my computer and it worked fine, a few hours later it produced the red and grey line error, which lasted longer and was followed by no blue screen so I restarted my computer and I had no visual output to either of my monitors. Every time I switched my Computer on after that it would light up and as soon as I pressed the power button it would switch off immediateley, and no error was showing on my motherboard. I assumed this problem was to do with my GPU, so I removed it and booted with my onboard DVI port and successfully restored my system to an earlier time. I then put my GPU back in and it had the same problem, so after restoring my computer AGAIN, I have declared that my GPU is faulty.

My specs are:

CPU: i5 3570K
GPU: XFX AMD 7970 3GB
RAM: 4GB
Motherboard: ASRock Z77 extreme4
SSD: Corsair Force 128GB
HDD: 1TB Hitatchi drive
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

I googled the error code and I have found the following threads:
- http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-system/stop-0x00000101/55c4c11c-a422-4e38-82fd-7bc0085ab16f
- http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/849655-blue-screen.html

Do I have 2 separate issues or was this all to do with my GPU not working? Any advice that will help me find a solution is appreciated.

I have a picture of the BSOD if it is needed.

Thanks in advance for your help,

- Tom

I use the normal AMD Gaming evolved software to update my graphics drivers, my PSU is the OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W Semi-Modular. The clip broke on the closest PCIe slot to my CPU a while back so I moved it to the other slot to prevent any damage to the GPU.

OK, the PSU is of good quality so there's no concern with power draw.

If the PCIe clip broke and the case was turned on its side, I'd wager that it became dislodged and that caused the BSOD. If it still happened after you switched the PCIe slot, then drivers are probably the cause.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that the AMD Gaming Evolved tool downloads the latest driver even if it's still in beta. I'd suggest you install the latest stable one instead, which should be version 14.301.1001.

No that was a while ago ignore why its in the other pci slot, there was no problem, I moved the card as a precaution months ago. I can't actually use the card as its providing no visual output at all, I'll try to install the drivers when I get home later.

I'm not sure because whenever I have the card in my system there is no visual response on my monitors whenever I switch the P.C on. If I press the power button again my P.C switches off straight away.

Any advice?

your gpu might be dying ... or you have a faulty motherboard

if you have a spare gpu can you pop it in?

On my Motherboard there is an error display on my motherboard that will show a number if there is an error with the board, and nothing appears so I'm assuming its my Motherboard as of now. I'll look into doing anything else later. I work in IT so I may see if there is any form of GPU I can borrow until Monday.

if you are certian that the mobo is fine, then the gpu is the culprit... as you said, test it on monday and report back
