Hey guys,

So I made a build back in late May this year with a 780 ti. I have an older computer that was an AMD build that is getting kind of outdated and the best part of it is definitely the video card which is a Radeon 6870. I was wondering if it's possible to get another 780 ti (since they are so relatively cheap now) and run those in SLI and have my 6870 run in my PCIe 4.0 slot?

The setup I'm shooting for looks like this:

2x GTX 780 ti (SLI) [PCIe 8.0]
One card powers Triple Monitor Surround setup (5760x1080)
Other card powers Single Monitor setup (It's a nice monitor refreshes at 144Hz)

6870 HD [PCIe 4.0]
Powers single accessory screen while running my SLI setup

This is my MoBo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132046

Any help is much appreciated.

there is no point. Also, you would need at least a 1200w PSU, depending on what else is in your system. Also, the SLI array would only run at PCIE 4x4. You would need a driver hack, which would be flakey at best and you would run into issues there.

The setup is possible. But some VERY odd points.

1.
2x GTX 780 ti (SLI) [PCIe 8.0]
One card powers Triple Monitor Surround setup (5760x1080)
Other card powers Single Monitor setup (It's a nice monitor refreshes at 144Hz)

That is not what SLI is, SLI allows 2 cards to work output THE SAME output. One or more displays.

2. 2 x GTX970 are just as fast as 2 xGTX780tis, cost less, use less power AND will perform better at higher resolutions due to more VRAM.

3. The third card can be used to power both the accessory monitor AND the 144Hz monitor, just don't expect great FPS on ALL games.

In short,

Use 2 x GTX970 for the Surround setup.
Use the HD6870 for any additional monitors.

This can be done with a QUALITY 850w PSU comfortably if you keep overclocking to a minimum

I think I understand what SLI is and I also understand that surround output can be viewed as a single monitor/output. What you stated here confuses me because what I read from NVIDIA Faq's states I can power two monitors with SLI.

"With GeForce R180 drivers (or later), standard SLI configurations for 2-way, 3-Way, and quad SLI support a maximum of two monitors."

This is what I'm getting at. Does it not mean that I could run the surround as one monitor and my separate monitor as the second? This is all theoretical...

Also, I'm not looking into dual 980's since I already own a 780 ti from May and I have found I'm able to get another one cheaper than a 980 from another source.

I'm not worried about power, my PSU is 1200 Watt certified and I highly doubt I'll even need above 1000 Watts seeing as my whole computer uses only 200-400 Watts with one 780 ti. I use a power monitor before my surge protector.

GTX970, not GTX980.
But you already have one GTX780ti , so get another I guess. Or you could sell it and get 2 GTX970.

SLI indicates that your cards are working together to display one output, that is on 1 or more monitors.
1 GTX780ti CAN run 3 monitors, however if you put the second one in and it runs a different monitor other than the triple display, it is NOT considered SLI.
You performance will also not improve for the triple monitors by doing it in this way.

I see where you're getting at here. I saw a diagram of gtx 600 series sli running surround 3D and an accessory display monitor so I thought it could be done with 780 ti's in SLI.

What I feel like I'll do is just swap displays whenever I want to change from my single 24" monitor to the surround setup.

I'm going to keep the 6870 running on another monitor separate from the surround 3D and my main monitor.

Thanks for the help
