I'm looking to build a computer based around gaming and some video editing/rendering. I never have, and probably never will, embrace the touchscreen. My primary hesitation for upgrading is backwards compatibility as I've had issues in the past with some strange programs that even XP took a little convincing to get working.

From my vendor price isn't much differentiated between the systems, but they do list the versions all as OEM.

I'm stuck in my old Windows 7 routine but with Windows 8 becoming the mainstream option and what I've heard of some performance improvements I'm definitely open to suggestion in the benefits of upgrading.

I would go 8 simply because support for 7 is ending soon. I believe mainstream support ends next year. 8 will continue passed that, and from all accounts 10 is the version we want. You might want to get whichever is cheapest then move to 10 ASAP.

Despite people calling it a "touchscreen UI" I have never had any issues with it on both of my normal computers. It's another thing to get used to, but if you know how to use a computer it's something that can be done within a week or 2. Aside from Metro and a better Task Manager, the differences aren't even that noticeable between the 2. I might even argue that 8 is faster in certain aspects.

For the most part the consensus is that if it worked on 7 it should work on 8. I've run into an incompatibility here or there, but for the most part all my stuff worked. It didn't really surprise me that 1 or 2 games had issues, it was a new OS after all and there was some stuff changed (the big issue I think I had was with Fallout 3)
