I'm looking to build a computer mostly for photo editing and also serve for media and very occasional gaming. This will be my first build. I'm looking at the potential for future dual monitors. Should I go with a graphics card with dual monitor support or use on board graphics in combo with a graphics card with single monitor support or does it not really matter?

Solution
Unless you will be playing fast action games, a discrete graphics card is not necessary.
Modern intel lga1150 motherboards will have integrated graphics capable of running three monitors at 1080P
You could certainly start with that and see how you do.
If you want higher resolutions, the monitor may need to be connected via Displayport or hdmi.

I like 2560 x 1600, but to do that will require a discrete graphics card. None of those affordable monitors have anything but dual link dvi connectors. Such a card need not be expensive, $65 might be a good budget.

4k monitors are a whole new ballgame.
