Computer is slow to load and often lags even with SSD

I have had this computer since 2010. I built it from scratch.
The components are:
- Windows 7
- AMD Phenom II x6 1090T
- Biostar (MCP6PB) M2+ Motherboard
- Seagate (ST31000520AS) Barracuda LP Hard Drive - 1TB capability (405 GB used)
- Imation (27509) Solid State Drive - SATA II - 223 GB capability (124 GB used)
- AMD Radeon HD 5700
I use LG Flatron - E2441 Monitors

My Issue:
For the last year I have known something is wrong because I can use a basic computer and it is faster than mine. I don't like that it is slow to load programs but I can live with it. The main problem that I am having is the computer will randomly have lag time. It just freezes for a few seconds and sometimes 15-20 seconds.

My Question:
What could be causing this issue?

What I Have Done
I have cleared out as much unused space as I could including temp files. I have not run a defrag because I heard with a SSD it is not required. I don't have any viruses or malware. I am current on updates for drivers.

SSD's equivalent to "Degraging" is "Trim". I would Google that. Windows 7 should be taking care of that for you, but older SSDs could still have issues with it. You should also ensure Trim is enabled (Google). You can also check for new firmware for your SSD from the manufactures website (make a backup to the HDD first).

Otherwise, some general troubleshooting, I'd check temperatures of your CPU and GPU (try CPUTemp or MSI Afterburner), and try downloading and installing the latest GPU, audio, and other drivers directly from the manufactures. Finally, try running memtest86 against your memory overnight (or 24 hours if you can), to rule out the memory.

I have the exact same issue right now and I am about to try what one of the moderators suggested to me. Maybe it will work for you too. http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2074967/failing-ssd-questions.html

PS: I posted asking about the same issue, and until recently I have been just living with the issue. I finally got around to doing a complete system backup last weekend, so I will soon be trying this myself. (6 months later, lol)

I am trying to create a System Image backup now. I will try that. Reply back what your findings are. I'll do the same.

I am up-to-date with all my drivers
I'll look into memtest86

My Tempuratures are as follows:
CPU - 29C
GPU - 52C
Motherboard - 35C

Those temps are during normal research online and nothing really going on in the background. I read that around 30C is normal for CPU. Are those temps not good. I am running 6 fans + a large CPU cooling fan

Uninstall all unnecessary programs, check startup programs. Download ccleaner and clear caches. Might even try registry if you feel like it.

You could always try some basic Windose autofixers, including:
"dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth"
"chkdsk"

What antivirus are you running? Might be worth trying Malwarebytes, as it's pretty good at finding PUP's.

I've heard SSD's lose their quality with time, not sure how fast nor how much. I'm also guessing your OS is installed on the SSD, right?

I have done your suggestions. Those are what I started with. I am running the paid version of AVG and I did already try Malwarebytes.
Do you have any other suggestions.
I am running my OS on the SSD. It could be that I need a new SSD, but I am trying to see if there is anything else I can do.

You really shouldn't use AVG, it's even worse than Norton! Try Avast, you honestly don't even need to pay for it.
Did dism or chkdsk fix anything? How about ccleaner?

I think I might have a document with recommendations for fixing stuff on my laptop, going to check it out tomorrow.. Gotta go to sleep soon!

Not to derail the thread, but AVG is rated one of the top free AV scanners these days, and Norton the top paid. I know that wasn't always the case, but times change.

That said, I too use Avast Free.

Anyway, Older gen SSDs did had have some issues with garbage collection. Let us know if you're considering an upgrade, but hopefully, that won't be needed.

Did you confirm trim was enabled?

I am not considering defeat just yet. I did find out that the SSD that I have does have Trim Support. I also finally gave up trying to look at invoices to what my ssd is and so I stopped being lazy and took it out of the computer to look at what it is. The SSD is a Mushkin with model number MKNSSDCR 240GB-DX SCSI. I dont know how they plays into my timeline, but either way all I know is it was a while ago when I made my computer and that is the SSD that is in it.

#Sincreator gave the idea through a thread he created that said to basically do a reformat of the SSD. But this means I need to create and backup a System Image before I can do that. I am having issues. If anyone wants to help I have created another thread that further explains my situation.
