Hello, I'm looking into buying a SSD for my laptop, And I planned on getting the 1TB 840 Evo but now I'm wondering how much better the 850 Pro is to the 840 Evo other then the fact it uses 3D nad stacking and has a longer life. Like is it worth the almost $200 price increase from the 1TB 840 Evo to the 1TB 850 Pro? If it isn't worth the extra money then I will just stick to the 840 Evo.

Solution
I would buy the 840 EVO. If there was a smaller difference in price - the 850 Pro would be an option (i.e. at $450 - $500 it may be worth it).
The 850 Pro is a better drive....but I will say this - Comparisons of "real" performance - your system boots in 4.8 seconds with the 840 EVO....with the 850 Pro it will boot in 4.2 seconds....Photoshop loads in 3.5 seconds with the EVO and 3.1 seconds with the 850 Pro (these numbers are close to what I observed on my computer).

Reliability wise - if you are using the drive for a database that is constantly reading/writing, you might get your money's worth for a PC....

Most of the performance gains with a SSD are in boot times and initial program loads. Your system won't be that much faster during web surfing, utilizing programs, etc....And in most cases, it would be suggested to go with a HDD for your data - I usually purchase a 128 or 256GB SSD for most systems with a 1TB HDD.

Probably should of mentioned that this is a gaming laptop. And it came with a 1tb hdd but it is so slow i hate it. So i will be using the ssd for is and games. And possibly some programs but that is it. I plan on adding a 2tb samsung spinpoint for my media storage too like movies, videos, downloads, pics, ect.

I'm simply asking which ssd would be better okay. I know the 850 pro is better then thr 840 Evo. But does it justify the huge price gap between the 2? Or should i just get the 840 Evo. I know i wont get a fps boost. But i hate my like 1 minute load time for games like bf4 and wow compared to my desktop which has a adata ssd.
and the reason for a 1tb is since this is a laptop i don't have room for tons of drives. And i own a lot of games.

I wouldn't spend the extra money on the 850. You will get about a 10% or so increase in speed - which is nothing like the difference between HDD and SSD. The reliability? I guess we will find out 10+ years from now....I mentioned the database writing to the drives which is a lot more intensive that gaming or other normal computer use could shrink that window down....the mean time before failure (MTBF) is more than a hard drive....

Alright thanks. Yea that is what i was wondering is if it would of been worth it for such a big price difference. I'll get the 840 Evo then and pair it up with a 2tb spinpoint.
