Hard Drives as Portable MP3 Players

I can't find anything quite close to what I am looking for here. I am picturing some kind of device that has an LCD display and MP3 player style controls on it with a built in battery that would power an external hard drive and read/ play the MP3 files off of it. That I can carry in my pocket. I am thinking specifically of a device that could connect to the sata hookups on an HDD like a Seagate slim drive. I am certain that the technology exists to make this happen. The closest thing I can come up with is a SATA media player. The problem with this solution is that it requires a wall adapter and they are usually fairly bulky/ require household stereo AV hookups. If I had an electrical engineering degree I could probably build one in my basement, but alas, I do not and I can't. Please help to make this dream a reality.

they don't make the ipod classic anymore, and there is not a device I am aware of that has comparable storage. I have a working ipod classic too, but I want something that has more storage capacity. I am far out of space on this thing. I know they probably don't make anything like what I am talking about, but it would be awesome if someone could figure out how to make this a reality. As far as I see it the biggest obstacle is a portable power source that is powerful enough to run a hard drive for at least 4 hours.

EDIT: Sorry this was meant to be a reply to i7Baby

Hey that's exactly what i want. I screwed up my Classic 80GB making a LOD cable (don't ask) I have a Fiio 1 but can't be bothered to keep changing micro sd cards for my library. I've been looking for a way to connect my toshiba external hard drive to it, 500GB of portable hi res music files would be a very cool thing. Did you ever work it out.

No I never got this one figured out. The issue is the power source for the HDD. Making a cable that would attach from hard drive to an SD card like adapter would work if you had a pass through transformer in a cable that you could connect to a fairly large solar panel maybe. Just no good way to reliably get the required voltage from a battery without that or a car battery. (kind of a lot of stuff to be carrying around.) Maybe Elon Musk can come up with a battery for it.
