I plan on picking up my first ever SSD, but my PSU has no more available SATA power connectors. All I have left are 3 unused Molex power connectors. If I use a Molex to SATA adapter, will it be safe for an SSD or even an HDD? Thank you. :)

Solution

Safe, yes. Usable, not necessarily.

A Molex to SATA connector should be fine for most HDDs and DVD Drives but it may not be sufficient for more modern SSDs and BluRay drives.

The SATA power connector includes a 3.3 volt rail as well as the traditional 5 volt and 12 volt rails. Any device that relies on the 3.3 volt rail will only function if it is connected to a proper SATA power connector as a Molex->SATA adapter will omit the 3.3 volt rail.

I don't think that would be a problem since all I would need to do is use the Molex to SATA power cables on my current HDDs, and use the original SATA Power connectors on the SSD. Would that work?
