Hello all-

My computer connects fine to my router via cat5 ethernet cord in the same room. But it won't connect when in the basement and using cat5 wall Jack. I get "unidentified network" message.

The wall Jack has 2 cat5 cords wired to it and one goes directly to router and other goes to smart tv and is not connected to smart tv. Any help would be appreciated. .. my wifi signal in the basement is like dial up!

A single RJ-45 jack used for Ethernet should not have 2 cables punched down into it. That could certainly be the source of your connection issue.
Generally the wall jacks all go to one central room. You need to place a switch at that location or at least connect the cables together that goes to the router to the cable that goes to the basement. It would be highly unlikely that the cable just happens to run directly from the room with the router to the other location.

Check the inside the wall jack at each end. Each jack should be wired in the exact same way to the other. The jacks may be color coded, so it should be easy to verify.

If it's a punch-down type jack, it's possible the wires may not be fully seated. You may need a punch-down tool to fix this.

You can find inexpensive network cable testers to check the cable between the jacks.

Also, check or try changing out the cables between the jack and the router/PC.

Hi Bill001 - Thanks for your post and help. Let me explain a little bit better. There are two ethernet cat5 wall jacks in the basement.: offiice and smart tv. The office ethernet wall jack has two cat5 cords punched into it (a total of 16 wires w/2 punched in each slot). I know where these cat5 cords are going to. One is plugged directly into the router and the other one is the smart tv cat5 wall jack for the smart tv (which has no smart tv plugged into it). There is no question about this part.

The question I mostly have is it common to have a setup like this and would that affect my connection problems? I thought cat5 cords would be joined at a switch not into a cat5 wall jack as described above (this was done by a contractor). Again both computers tested have no problem connecting to the router via cat5 cord in the same room as the router but both cannot connect to the router via the office wall jack.

Thank you!

Hi Budda - Thanks for your help and response. I have checked the cat5 cords at the wall jack and router and they are configured according the "B" setup properly. The contractor checked the signal and said that there was a signal between the office wall jack and the router so it seems that they are punched down properly. The one thing that seems odd about this setup is that the office wall jack has 2 cat5 cords "punched" into it which I was wondering if this could account for the connection problems.

Thanks Buddha. I rewired the wall jack and to solve the problem. My contractor stated he had done this many times before without a problem so I'm not sure what was wrong in this case. Possibly that the cat5 cord going to the smart tv was not plugged into anything. In either case I appreciate your help.
