How can I partition a 3 TB Seagate External hard drive?

So, I bought a nice 3TB External Hard drive to back up pictures and other files to and see if removing all that off my main internal drives helped speed up boots and such, plus just to have a back up of them.

The drive comes as 1 large 3 TB partition, but what I want to know is how do I make it into smaller partitions, so perhaps I could designate them for specific uses, like 50 gigabyte, 100 gigabytes etc? That way I could store pictures in one area, games in another, etc?

I tried shrinking the existing volume by 50 gig and now it shows as unallocated, but I can do nothing with it. I am unable to assign it a drive lettter, reintegrate it back into the other partition which is active, or use that area in any way now.

So, do I have to reformat the drive? I thought I knew how to do this ages ago, but really have had no need to mess around with it in many years.

Hello, lokblaze!

You can also simply use Disk Management in Windows without the need to download anything.
Make sure if you have any data on the drive to back it up, because this will delete all the files on it.
But I guess it's a new one, so you can simply do this:
Right-click on "My Computer" > select "Manage" > choose "Disk Management" under Storage >
Select the external disk drive under Volume > Right-click on the area "Unallocated Space" > then select "New Simple Volume" >

Afterwards a wizard will appear to guide you through the process:
> Enter a size for the new partition. The default value is the full capacity of the external hard drive
> Choose a smaller size to create multiple partitions on the drive > then click "Next"

> Assign a drive letter to the new partition > Click "Next" to continue
> Choose a file system format. The choices include NTFS, exFAT, FAT, FAT32 or GPT, with the default being NTFS. BUT if you plan to use the external on a Mac OS as well as Windows, then select exFAT (this file system allows read/write options of the drive on both operating systems)
> Click "Finish" to complete the disk setup, then Windows will format the external by itself.

Hope this helps as well! :)
