Im getting a sound from what I believe may be my optical drive, it sounds like I have a disc in there and it is moving, yet there isnt. It only happens at a random time within 5 minutes of startup. It isnt too loud but im just curious if anyone else has this or if my disc drive it faulty. I've had this for a good 2-3 weeks and I havent put a disc in it for about 1 1/2 - 2 months, so I don't see how it could've broken itself. anyway, thanks.

Solution
First, I'd pull the drive and start the rig - if you still hear the sound, then it's not that drive, next try starting the rig with the SATA and power cables hooked and holding the drive, then you'll hear and or feel it if it's what's making the sound, if before it gets to Win then it's the initialization of the device from the mobo/BIOS, if it caomes as Windows starts, then it's Win seeing it and/or looking for something from the drive. If that's it, can look in startup and check the items there to see if any haven't actually started
Everyone/or old ones have. It's just as simple. t was done by the motherboard. If you take a look into the BIOS, the "boot priority order is set in order as HDD, optical drive, network, external or etc etc etc. So your motherboard powers up everything for a second at startup and thus the sound from the ODD. This is not an issue. I have it in my laptop for years too. But the ODD doesn't read or write :D.
I think if the HDD is slightly unresponsive on the startup, the mobo powers the oDD too for a second

Im not overly sure. I can hear it when It starts up and im sitting on my chair above, as soon as i get off my chair and put my ear close to the front of my case it goes away, even when I get back up, its very strange. Its either the optical drive, or possibly the front fan, but the sound resembles a quieter sound of an xbox 360 disc drive working when you first put a disc in.

Are you sure? I got my pc at the start of 2013, and the drive doesn't even have a name. Its just those ones with a rectangle button at the bottom right with a green light when its open. Surely laptop drives are different to desktops?

Thats a good suggestion, do you know how to find any of these files that could be causing the noise? cheers.

It only happens after windows starts. How do I stop windows from trying to use my disc drive or whatever? I checked startup options on norton and none of them are really related to the disc drive.

On another note im just sitting here browsing not doing much and I can still hear a sound that resembles a disc spinning, it happens for about 1 second and goes away, its not too loud, and it doesnt sound very bad compared to those list of pc death sounds you can hear, I dont know if it is related or not, im certain it probably is.

Edit: its definitely the disc drive, when i put my ear right up against the closed tray, i hear a errrrrrrr sound, it can only be heard when you put your ear right against it, and also the low rumble sound of a disc moving. I'll get onto using safe mode, although i doubt it will make a difference. The errrr sound is still there when i open the tray, it may just be the sound of the disc drive on and working, the rumble seems to stop when the tray is opened.

Anyway, Confirmed thats its not any HDD or SSD by using chkdsk and crystaldisk info, both read 0 bad sector and good/ 100% good. If it gets any louder or if I have spare time, i'll take it down to my local repair shop as I have a warranty from the shop previously, anyway, thanks for the help and replies, its appreciated.
