Hi there. I'm buying a new computer and wanted to know if my Motherboards BIOS will be updated in order to correctly run alongside my CPU. I was reading somewhere that the Intel haswell refresh CPU's may not be compatible with some motherboards and was wondering if mine was.

MSI H81M-P33 Socket 1150

I was going to try and contact the manufacturer but, I would have to go through a whole process of signing up which I just cant be bothered with. I also know that the H97 motherboards are compatible with these types of CPU's but I don't have the money to purchase them as they are too expensive for me. If anybody knows if my motherboard is or is not compatible with my CPU which is the Intel Core i5-4590 then could you please tell me or direct me on how to update the BIOS of the motherboard prior to using Haswell refresh CPU's as I'm unfamiliar with what this term means.

Thanks for responses !

Yes it is compatible but you will need to have BIOS V1.4 or later. The i5 4590 is supported after v1.4. The latest version is v1.7 so will be best to get that for guaranteed compatibility and best performance. If you don't have 1.4 or higher, you will need to use the mflash utility to update your BIOS from a memory stick. Follow the instructions in your motherboard manual for specifics.

If you update the BIOS from a memory stick or anything else, say, bios flash utility, then the board will boot, so the system is up and running, which is not helping the guy since the motherboard won't boot with the processor, not being supported by the board. You will get long beeps and your system won't boot. You have to use an i3 or lower compatible CPU(pentium on 1150) to flash the BIOS to the newest version then swap in your CPU to be up and running.

Yes thats right. I misread. I thought he already has the board and wants the new CPU.

Btw ASUS boards allow you to boot without a CPU and update BIOS.

In that case, you have these options:

1) Take the board to a PC repair shop to see if they have an old CPU that will work and can be used to update BIOS if you don't have one.
2) Buy one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BIOS-CHIP-MSI-X99S-GAMING-9AC-Z97M-GAMING-A88X-G43-H81M-P33-Z97-G55-SLI-/171475699899?pt=UK_Computing_Other_Computing_Networking&hash=item27ecbf88bb but this will need soldering on. May be a tedious process.
3) Take a risk and hope that the board comes with a compatible BIOS!

Also you can get this one if you can't get to a repair shop:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Pentium-G3220-3-0-ghz-Processor-LGA-1150-Complete-w-Fan-Heatsink-/141474317379?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20f086c443

I am sorry tambeshakunt but number 2 is not a valid option for the guy. If he doesn't know how to flash a BIOS, I am positive he won't be able to solder the cip onto the mobo.

(get a pentium G3220 on 1150 off ebay) - that will definitely work on your motherboard and OR go to a repair shop to flash the new BIOS. The i5 is definitely worth going through all this trouble.
